Your garage door is the largest opening in your house
It's also the weakest. Standard residential doors are rated for about 30 mph wind loads — Florida HVHZ zones require 150 mph or higher. If your door blows in during a hurricane, the pressure spike inside the house frequently lifts the roof off.
Three options, ranked
Replace with an HVHZ-rated impact door
The best long-term choice. Modern impact doors are rated 150 to 180 mph, come pre-reinforced, and qualify for wind-mitigation insurance discounts that often pay back the cost within five years.
Add a retrofit reinforcement kit
If your existing door is in good shape and only a few years old, vertical steel braces can be added to bring it up to roughly 130 mph. Cheaper than full replacement, but adds weight that requires re-balancing the springs.
Plywood as a last resort
Only consider this if a storm is imminent. Cut 5/8" plywood to fit each panel and anchor it on the inside with 3" deck screws into the frame studs — not into the door itself. This is a 60 mph upgrade at best.
What to inspect every June
- Track bolts — should be wrench-tight, no rust.
- Rollers — nylon rollers handle wind loads better than steel; replace if cracked.
- Hinges — heavy-duty hinges spread storm loads across the panel.
- Weatherstripping — gaps along the bottom seal funnel wind under the door.
- Wind code sticker — required on every door installed in Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach. If yours doesn't have one, the door is likely not rated.
Insurance and permits
A permitted, HVHZ-rated installation produces a Florida Wind Mitigation Form (OIR-B1-1802) that your insurer uses to apply discounts — often 20-40% off the wind portion of your premium. Without the permit, you don't get the discount. Always insist on a pulled permit.
FAQs
Will my old opener work with an impact door?
Usually yes, but impact doors are heavier — older 1/2 HP openers may struggle. We recommend upgrading to a 3/4 HP DC motor when the door is replaced.
How long does HVHZ installation take?
One day for a standard two-car door, including hauling away the old door and pulling the permit.
Are wood doors hurricane-rated?
Some custom wood doors can be HVHZ-rated, but they cost roughly 3-4x a comparable steel impact door and need more maintenance in Florida humidity.
