Belt vs chain vs jackshaft
Belt-drive openers are quieter and what we recommend for any home where the bedroom shares a wall with the garage. Chain-drive is cheaper and tougher — better for detached garages or workshops. Jackshaft (wall-mount) clears the ceiling for storage racks and is the move for high-ceiling garages.
Why battery backup is required by Florida law
Florida statute 553.515 (since 2019) requires battery backup on all new garage door openers. Reason: power outages during hurricanes left families trapped or unable to evacuate. Battery backup gives you ~20 cycles on a charge — enough to get the car out and the door secured.
Smart features worth paying for
WiFi pairing (LiftMaster myQ, Chamberlain) lets you check if the door is open from your phone. Some models do delivery driver access. The Camera-equipped openers (a small upcharge) let you watch the package drop. Worth it for high-theft neighborhoods.
How long the install takes
90 minutes typical for opener swap (we use the existing rail if it's sound). 2-3 hours for a full new install with new rail. We program 2 remotes and the keypad before we leave.
